Virginia
From:
Pythian History by Wm. D. Kennedy - published 1904
Chapter LXIV.
John H. King, who instituted the first Lodge in Virginia, and
H. C. G. Hartman, the second Deputy, very largely furnished
the early data...the author had gathered many items himself.
There is little to be said, outside of the story of the individual
Lodges regarding the introduction of the
Order in Virginia. Its proximity to the District of Columbia
made the Pythian history of the latter a part of
the story of both. Indeed, the first Lodge, in Alexander, was
considered one of the Washington family.
As will be seen, the initial Lodge of Virginia was instituted
at the opening of the year 1865, only lasted for
short period, and then died. John H. King, who organized this
Lodge, was made the first Deputy Grand
Chancellor of Virginia. It was three years after this that the
second Lodge came to life, at Richmond,
thus really becoming the mother Lodge of Virginia. Than Brother
H. C. G. Hartman was appointed Deputy
for Virginia, so continuing until the organization of the Grand
Lodge. |
Alexandria
Lodge #1. Alexandria, Virginia
From: Pythian History by Wm. D. Kennedy - Published 1904
Chapter LXIV.
Instituted: Feb. 1 , 1865 (Held last meeting: July 27, 1865)
In an interview which the author had, December 10, 1896, at
Washington D. C, with John H. King, P. G. C.,
relative to the early history of the Order, among other things
related by him, was that he received the
"degrees of Initiatory, and the First and Second,"
in Franklin Lodge No.2 of Washington, May 6, 1864, and
the original records verify this. He also said that he was attached
to the mortar schooner, Adolph Hugle
stationed off Alexandria, Va.," and that while so engaged,
he secured a petition for Alexandria Lodge No. 1.
The further facts were obtained from Brother H. C. G. Hartman,
of Richmond, Va. He stated that on February 1, 1865, the Lodge
was organized at Alexandria and that the first officers were:
John H. King, Venerable Patriarch;
J. L. Brown, Worthy Chancellor; A. J. Flowers, Vice Chancellor;
R. W. Roberts, Scribe; H. Dick, Assistant Scribe;
J. R. Bowen, Banker; J. L. Robinson, Guide; W. Hunt, Inner Steward;
G. H. Melton, Outer Steward.
He further states that on April 3, 1865, the following officers
were elected: A. J. Flowers, Worthy Chancellor;
R. W. Roberts, Vice Chancellor; W. M. Johnson, Scribe; J. Colton,
Assistant Scribe; J. R. Gary, Guide; R. Griffin, Inner Steward,
and W. Hunt, Outer Steward.
On June 29, 1865, a further election of officers was held, with
the following result: J. R. Bowen, Worthy
Chancellor; W. M. Johnson, Vice Chancellor; G. Mellon, Scribe;
G. Siggars, Assistant Scribe; T. J. Edilen,
Banker; J. R. Gary, Guide; R. Griffin, Inner Steward, and F.
K. Mull, Outer Steward, and this was the last.
Brother Hartman's review regarding this Lodge then closed, in
the following language:
"The records of July 27 show a membership of 20, which
was the last meeting of the Lodge, most of the
officers having moved from Alexandria, and but little interest
being manifested on the part of the members to continue the
Lodge. Although starting under favorable auspices, in a few
short months lived and died Alexandria Lodge No. 1 of Alexandria,
Virginia.
Different search has failed to bring to the surface the records
of this Lodge, which had so short an existence.
No attempt was ever made to revive it, nor has any Lodge in
Virginia ever been given its place on the roster. |
